Gemma Williams
Head of Wellbeing and Relational Practice
I oversee the teams dedicated to staff wellbeing, student wellbeing, and relational practice. Relational practice is a framework focused on fostering a positive culture through the power of building strong relationships. Within the team I also have the Healthy Choices Advisors who focuses on students' wellbeing from a public health perspective.
I was initially drawn to the Student Wellbeing Manager role because it aligned so closely with my values. Having spent 20 years in youth and community work for local and regional charities, I hadn't previously considered a career in the education sector. However, the opportunity to make a difference on a larger scale resonated with me. After researching the organisation, I was impressed by their commitment to transforming lives and their passion for prioritising student wellbeing, which convinced me it was the right place to grow my career.
I like working for an organisation that values kindness, relationships and wellbeing. This really aligns with my values. Even though everyone has different responsibilities, you can see those core values woven into everything we do
I really love working with the team, we've built positive relationships and are passionate about the work we do. I like working for an organisation that values kindness, relationships and wellbeing. This really aligns with my values. Even though everyone has different responsibilities, you can see those core values woven into everything we do.
I've been at the organisation five years now and I feel that I have developed professionally but also personally over the last five years and feel like my career has progressed quite quickly. As I mentioned, I did start off as a Student Wellbeing Manager, only focusing on student wellbeing, but then went on to looking at staff wellbeing and then finally being promoted to Head of Wellbeing and Relational Practice. So I've absolutely developed here and I've been given the opportunity to develop in CPD internally and externally. Being able to have autonomy over my work and my team and see opportunities to build and develop the work which I really appreciate that I've got that flexibility and independence around that and the organisation really supports that kind of autonomy and as long as it's linked to the values so I feel like I've been able to develop the work which is great.
My first piece of advice would be: don't be overwhelmed by the size of the organisation. Take the time to do your research and see if the culture truly resonates with you. If you can, reach out and chat with someone in a similar role is the best way to get a genuine feel for what the day-to-day life here actually looks like.
