About the Role

Leeds City College are seeking an enthusiastic, proactive and innovative Progress Mentor for wellbeing to join our dynamic team in the 14 - 16 Skills Programme. This role is reduced year, 37 hours per week, 39 weeks per year.

In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting students' academic success and progression while looking after everyone’s wellbeing. You will ensure that students receive the necessary coaching and support to excel in their learning journey. All of our learners have an EHCP with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs and benefit from the right learning support, regular intervention and support around wellbeing and mental health. You will promote positive student mental health and wellbeing and engage in therapeutic interventions to support the wellbeing of,  and work to alleviate the presenting needs of these students, so that they may effectively engage in their education and progress.

What You Will Do

  • Support student success and retention by delivering high quality mental health and wellbeing, including short term supportive interventions for students experiencing a range of psychological and emotional difficulties. 
  • Deliver to students during form time and supervise breakfast and lunch club.
  • To cover lessons at short notice as required.
  • Lead on the development of new initiatives and ways of working, to meet the changing needs of students.
  • To be responsible for a caseload of students who require coaching and online support as part of their planned learning programme
  • To develop and agree individual learning plans, identify SMART targets and set aspirational goals for students, liaising with English and Maths subject specialists and other academic and support staff.
  • To track and monitor progress towards achievement using assessment grades
  • To facilitate student learning and development through highly effective and supportive coaching / mentoring techniques.
  • To keep confidential records and provide reports and statistical data as required.
  • To identify barriers to learning and implement a range of strategies to overcome barriers with students.

About You

  • Experience of working with disengaged / disadvantaged young people in an educational setting.
  • Able to develop, coordinate and implement the delivery of  therapeutic interventions with students and holistically assess risk and need to inform appropriate ongoing actions and package of support.
  • A good listener who is empathetic and non-judgemental.
  • Able to stay calm and work under pressure and utilise available resources effectively.
  • Knowledge of barriers to learning and ways to overcome them, particularly with disaffected young people
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, including students, college staff, parents and carers.
  • Good organisational and administrative skills.
  • Able to work positively & effectively as a member of a team and on own initiative.
